Russia Digital Ruble event
Overview
Russia's central bank digital currency, the digital ruble, has been under development by the Bank of Russia and tested since 2023 with a select cohort of banks, individuals and firms. A mass launch had been scheduled for 1 July 2025 but was delayed; the central bank now requires the country's largest systemically important banks to enable digital ruble transactions and major retailers to accept it as a payment method from 1 September 2026. Federal government bodies received approval to use the digital ruble for budget and social payments from 1 January 2026.
