Brazil Drex event
Overview
The Central Bank of Brazil is advancing its digital currency initiative, Drex, which was previously known as Real Digital. The project aims to create a digital representation of the Brazilian real alongside infrastructure for tokenised transactions and smart-contract execution. Initial onboarding of 16 pilot participants occurred in July 2023, with a subsequent phase addressing privacy and interoperability, as well as expanding into trade finance and agricultural commodity settlement. Following challenges in balancing transaction privacy with distributed ledger technology during the pilot, the central bank announced plans for a phased rollout around 2026, adopting a centralised model without blockchain components.
