Overview
Gnosis, the organisation behind the Gnosis Chain, first deployed a batch-auction decentralised exchange mechanism called Gnosis Protocol in 2020. An upgraded version, Gnosis Protocol v2, followed in April 2021; it introduced a solver-based system that aggregates orders into batches to identify Coincidence of Wants (CoWs) among traders, with CowSwap serving as its initial front end. In January 2022, the Gnosis DAO considered GIP-13, a proposal to separate the protocol into a standalone entity. Later that year, the project was rebranded as CoW Protocol, placed under the governance of a new CoW DAO and issued its own COW token, after securing $23 million in funding during the spinout.
