Overview
The European Central Bank's retail central bank digital currency initiative, the digital euro, advanced on October 30, 2025 when its Governing Council approved progression from the preparation phase—which had lasted from November 2023 to October 2025—into a technical readiness building stage, stopping short of an issuance commitment. A pilot program may start around mid-2027, and a first issuance could occur during 2029, provided the European Union's co-legislators pass the digital euro regulation.
