Merge 2022 event
Overview
Ethereum's proof-of-work era ended on 15 September 2022 around 06:43 UTC when the network merged its execution layer with the Beacon Chain consensus layer, completing a shift to proof-of-stake. The transition, which followed roughly seven years of research and development, eliminated mining on the chain. Validators now stake 32 ETH—either directly or through pooling arrangements—to propose and validate blocks, replacing the previous mining infrastructure. The change reduced Ethereum's power usage by an estimated 99.9%.
