Overview
From 30 June 2024, the first operational phase of the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation took effect. This stage, comprising Titles III and IV, focuses on asset-referenced tokens and e-money tokens — collectively known as stablecoins. Under the new rules, any issuer seeking to publicly offer or admit such tokens to trading within the EU must first obtain authorisation. The regulation, which originally came into force on 29 June 2023, follows a staggered implementation schedule, and no general grace period applies to the stablecoin requirements.
