Wormhole Bridge Exploit event

security-exploit · PageRank 0.0008

Overview

Wormhole, a token bridge linking Solana to Ethereum and other networks, suffered an exploit on 2 February 2022. The attacker stole 120,000 wrapped ether (wETH), valued at approximately $320 million at that time. The breach leveraged Wormhole's reliance on a deprecated Solana function, load_current_index_at, enabling the injection of a fake sysvar account to circumvent signature verification. This allowed the attacker to invoke complete_wrapped and mint wETH on Solana without corresponding deposits. A $10 million bounty offered to the attacker received no response. On 3 February 2022, Jump Crypto, Wormhole's parent trading firm, replenished the missing ether to maintain the bridge's solvency. The incident ranked as the largest crypto exploit of 2022 at that point and among the most significant DeFi attacks ever recorded.

Within The Counterparty graph, Wormhole Bridge Exploit connects to 3 tracked entities, most strongly to Solana, Ethereum, Wormhole.
