Wormhole Hack event
Overview
On 2 February 2022, the Wormhole token bridge — linking Solana to Ethereum and other networks — was drained of 120,000 wrapped ether (wETH), valued at approximately $320 million at the time of the incident. The perpetrator exploited a deprecated Solana function, load_current_index_at, by inserting a counterfeit sysvar account to circumvent signature verification, then executed complete_wrapped to mint unbacked wETH on Solana. A $10 million bounty offered to the hacker elicited no response. On 3 February 2022, Jump Crypto, Wormhole’s parent trading firm, replenished the missing ether to maintain the bridge’s solvency. The event constituted the largest crypto exploit of 2022 and ranked among the most significant DeFi attacks on record.
