Overview

Bitstamp, a cryptocurrency exchange established in 2011 by Nejc Kodrič and Damijan Merlak in Slovenia, was created as a European counterpart to Mt. Gox. The platform relocated to Luxembourg City in 2016, where it obtained a license from the Luxembourg government to operate as a fully EU-regulated payment institution, facilitating trades of multiple cryptocurrencies against fiat currencies such as USD and EUR. In 2015, the exchange experienced a security breach resulting in the theft of fewer than 19,000 bitcoins, leading to a temporary suspension of services. Robinhood Markets agreed to acquire Bitstamp for approximately $200 million in 2024, with the transaction finalized in June 2025.
