Overview
Bitstamp, a cryptocurrency exchange established in 2011 by Nejc Kodrič and Damijan Merlak, was created as a European counterpart to Mt. Gox and is frequently referred to as the longest-running crypto exchange. The platform supports dozens of tradable assets and maintains numerous licences and registrations in various jurisdictions. Belgian investment firm NXMH purchased Bitstamp in 2018, with Ripple subsequently acquiring a minority interest. In June 2024, Robinhood agreed to buy Bitstamp for approximately $200 million in cash; the transaction was completed in June 2025, broadening Robinhood's reach from retail brokerage to institutional and international crypto markets.
