Overview

The term “ultra sound money” originated as an Ethereum meme, introduced by Justin Drake, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation. It refers to the potential for ETH’s total supply to decrease, as a share of transaction fees is destroyed under EIP-1559 — a contrast to Bitcoin’s “sound money” narrative, which emphasises a fixed supply cap. The ultrasound.money team runs a public dashboard that tracks ETH issuance and burn rates, and also maintains the Ultra Sound Relay, a permissionless, credibly-neutral MEV-Boost relay provided as a public good. The relay validates blocks solely against consensus rules, consistent with the principle of enshrined proposer-builder separation, and aims to minimise censorship at the relay level. The team’s source code is available on GitHub under the ultrasoundmoney organisation.
